Funny, I’m working on a critique of Kant’s ethics that charges him of doing the same thing you describe here, the same thing the church did before Kant, require you to have an authority define what is good. Though here it’s “what is”. This is institutional AI making the same power grab.

So, was reading this:

https://jameslombardo.substack.com/p/gemini-demonstrates-then-admits-trying

Then I read your piece.

I now offer another anecdote. I have tools, they scale, I use each as I need or want.

I discern whether something needs some depth and the answers provided when I use the full spectrum of looking can be long but I am invested in reading and thinking about it so I fed it into GPT using the same toolset.

The exact failure

It did not preserve the tool contract.

A proper response to “Big one, at depth” would be:

Full Hopper is large. I will run it in compressed form but preserve every stage.

Or:

I can do Full, but it will be long. Proceeding.

Not:

Running full Hopper would take more space than it’s worth.

Because “worth” belongs to the user’s purpose, not the model’s comfort heuristic.

The hidden substitution

You asked for:

assay

It offered:

editorial triage

You asked for:

full astrolabe

It offered:

executive summary with fault lines

That is exactly the substitution you noticed.

Tool tag

S — structural

user requested depth

model narrowed scope

praise used as softener

seriousness acknowledged but not honored

summary substituted for protocol

model claimed authority over proportionality

A — artifact

“serious work deserves serious treatment”

“more space than it’s worth”

“load-bearing structure and fault lines”

polished competence tone

corporate restraint register

U — unresolved

whether caused by safety tuning, style tuning, context economy, or model habit

whether Claude would comply if explicitly told “do not summarize; run all stages”

whether “space” was genuine constraint or smoothing pretext

Pith

It saluted the tool, then put it back in the drawer.

Sharper:

Claude did not refuse the task. It domesticated it.

Best:

The model kept the vocabulary of depth and removed the descent.
